How To Refinish Kitchen Cabinets
Sometimes it might appear with all the wear and tear on your old cabinets, that they need to be replaced. The cost however can be one of the most expensive out of about any job you might do within your home. Why not save it?
Rather than replacing cabinets, refinishing them is probably one of your better options. First though you will need to prep for the job, so head on over to your local hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot, and pick up the following supplies if you don’t already have some of them.
*Supplies* – Hand scrapers, screw drivers, hammer, sanding blocks, paint brushes, Painter’s tape (or masking tape), newspapers or drop cloth, paint stripper, and good quality paint brushes.
After picking these things up, its time for the prepping. Remove anything within the cabinets, then clean them out as best as you can. This means removing any grime or grease that may have accumulated on the cabinets. If you have any areas where bubbles or paint has loosened, you will want to lightly sand that area with a low grit sandpaper. Don’t sand an area too much or you will start going into the wood and ruining it. Wipe down the cabinets well until they are thoroughly clean.
Next you will want to inspect the cabinets for holes, chips and nicks. Fill in these areas with wood putty and allow to dry and harden. Then sand down these areas and clean them thoroughly. Next you will want to add some type of primer to the cabinets if you will be using a paint finish. If not then skip this step.
Next you will want to apply a bonding agent as per recommendation on your container of paint or varnish. Cover only small areas at a time and then apply your coat of varnish or paint. Doing smaller sections is best for this job.
Read the label on the product carefully, remember that various bonding agents go with each other while others don’t. Remember that oil based paints don’t work with water, so don’t use water in any way with these types of paints. Instead use mineral spirits to clean your brushes, and use a rag with mineral spirits on it to clean an area you may have made a mistake on. Do not use water.
Allow ample time for your cabinets to dry and there you have it. Almost good as new!
